BFT Access Control Installation: The Dallas Owner’s Guide

BFT access control installation in Dallas typically runs $450 to $1,850 fully installed, depending on the model, the keypad or reader type, and what wiring already exists. We stock BFT keypads, card readers, antennas, and control boards on our trucks and in our local shop, so most replacements happen the same visit. Most owners discover the problem the hard way: the keypad stops reading codes, the intercom goes silent, or the gate only responds from one device and not the other.

A failed access control unit doesn’t always mean a full replacement. The fix might be a worn keypad membrane, a corroded terminal, or a receiver that lost its programming after a power surge. If the gate still moves under direct command from the motor, the issue is almost always in the access control side of the system. That’s the part we’re going to walk through here, so you know what’s broken, what it costs, and who to call in Dallas.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT builds access control for most of their operator lines: the Thalia (light swing gates), Phobos (heavy swing), Deimos and Icaro (sliding gates), and the Rigel hydraulic series. The access control add-ons cross over between these lines, but not always. A BFT keypad made for a 24V Thalia board may not communicate the same way with a Rigel, so the model number on the board matters more than the model number on the gate.

BFT uses several control board families: Libra, Mercury, Deimos BT, Icaro, and the older Leo boards. Before you order or install anything, open the motor cover and look at the board label. The board revision is the real compatibility checkpoint. A keypad or reader that worked on a Libra board from 2010 may not speak the same protocol as a 2022 Deimos board. Dallas heat has a way of baking labels into a blur, so take a photo of it before you call. It saves a second trip.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: BFT’s own parts cost more but they carry the factory warranty and are predictable to program. Quality aftermarket keypads and readers can be reliable and are what we carry when they reduce the total by $100 or more. For control boards themselves, we almost always recommend genuine BFT. Aftermarket boards are where we see compatibility gremlins show up in the programming stage.

Signs Your BFT Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • The keypad accepts your code but the gate doesn’t move. The keypad’s wireless signal isn’t reaching the receiver, or the relay on the board isn’t closing. This is the most common BFT access failure we see in Dallas, and it’s frequently corrosion inside the keypad housing.
  • Some codes work, others don’t. The keypad’s memory is usually fine. The dome buttons under the silicone keypad are worn or cracked, so the button doesn’t complete the circuit when pressed. This is a mechanical failure that only affects certain digits.
  • The intercom rings but you can’t hear the person, or the person can’t hear you. Intercom audio failures are often dead microphones or damaged speaker cones. Humidity and heat swings inside a Dallas gate pedestal can ruin audio components within a few seasons.
  • The gate opens or closes on its own. A failing access control relay or a failing radio receiver can send a phantom open signal when it faults. It can also be a stuck push-button contact on the access control itself. This one deserves watching because the gate can cycle without you knowing it.
  • The access control works, but only from inches away. That’s a failing receiver or a dying antenna. On BFT systems with remote antennas, the antenna coax or its connector is a frequent failure point after a few years of Texas sun and rain.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

The installed price for BFT access control replacement in Dallas falls into a range based on the job size:

Work Performed Dallas Installed Price Range
BFT keypad replacement (standalone) $450 – $750
BFT keypad with receiver/antenna $650 – $1,100
BFT card reader plus keypad combo $800 – $1,450
BFT intercom audio replacement $600 – $1,000
Full access control rebuild (board, keypad, wiring) $1,250 – $1,850

The written price covers parts, labor, programming, and cleanup. You get the number before any work starts, and that number doesn’t change unless we uncover something that clearly requires you to approve a different scope. Every replacement is backed by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it isn’t right within a year, the return visit is free. And when the tech drives to your home in Dallas, you’ll already have their name and photo. The Threshold Standard means a badged, background-checked technician shows up at the door you’re expecting, at the time you’re told.

DIY or Call Us?

Call us. That’s the honest answer on access control. The danger isn’t in changing a keypad face or reseating a wire, but in the temptation to open the control board cabinet and test live 24V terminals with half-remembered instructions. BFT boards pack line voltage on one side of the transformer and low voltage on the other. A mistaken probe or a dropped tool across the wrong terminals can fry a board, which turns a $500 keypad replacement into a $1,400 board-level rebuild. The lower-voltage side isn’t lethal the way gate motors can be, but it will happily kill the board that the whole system depends on.

What you can safely do while waiting for us: take a clear photo of the board label and the keypad model sticker, note whether the gate still moves from the remote, and write down exactly which buttons or functions stopped working. That information lets us bring the right BFT part on the first trip instead of the second. Past that, let a trained tech handle it. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it, before I touch a thing. Call (361) 322-4460.
