Linear keypad and intercom repair in Dallas typically runs $185 to $420 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the keypad, the intercom module, or the wiring between them. We stock Linear-compatible keypads and intercom parts on our trucks, so most repairs are done the same day we arrive. The honest answer is that most Dallas homeowners discover the failure the same way: the keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move, or the intercom picks up but the voice is so staticky you can’t tell who’s out there. Sometimes it’s dead silent at both ends, which usually means a power or board issue. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you what it costs to fix it – before I touch a thing.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Linear. But we’ve been repairing their keypads and intercoms across Dallas since 2008, and we know which models fail, which parts interchange, and which ones aren’t worth putting another dollar into.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
The work we do covers the full range of Linear keypads and intercom systems you’ll find on Dallas gates: the AK-11 and AK-21 surface-mount keypads, the AE-1000 and AE-2000 access control keypads, the AM-KP flush-mount series, and the older Linear IEI keypads that are still running on a surprising number of Lakewood and Preston Hollow properties. For intercoms, we service Linear’s telephone entry systems, including the older AE-500 and AE-1000 telephone entry panels, along with the MGT and APeX series gate access controllers.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people learn the hard way: Linear changed their wiring protocol between the older IEI-generation keypads and the current AK series. You can’t just splice a new AK-11 onto old IEI wiring and expect it to talk to the control board. Sometimes it works, sometimes the gate ignores the keypad entirely, and sometimes you get phantom opens at 3 a.m. That kind of intermittent failure is worse than no keypad at all. If you’re not sure which generation you have, open the keypad housing and look at the circuit board. The model number is printed on it, usually in white silkscreen near the wire terminals. Snapping a photo and sending it to us before we come out saves you a trip charge and gets the right part on the truck the first time.
On OEM versus aftermarket: we stock both. For newer Linear AK-series keypads, we generally install genuine Linear parts because the fit and the backlighting match what you already have, and the warranty from Linear is straightforward. For the older discontinued IEI and AE generation, genuine parts are getting scarce, and quality aftermarket replacements are often the smarter play. We’ll tell you which one makes sense for your gate and why, and the price is written down before we start. A warden is trusted to watch over a place and keep it secure – that’s the whole idea behind a gate, and it’s the standard we hold our parts choices to.

Signs Your Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing
- Keypad lights up but the gate won’t open. This usually points to a failed relay on the keypad’s output, not the gate operator itself. The keypad is sending a signal, but the relay that actually closes the circuit has worn out. We can bench-test this in about ten minutes.
- Intermittent entry – works sometimes, not others. In Texas heat, the solder joints on older Linear keypad boards expand and contract until they crack. You get a keypad that works when it’s cool in the morning and quits when the Dallas sun has been beating on it all afternoon. It’ll drive you crazy, and it won’t heal itself.
- Buttons require hard, repeated presses. The membrane switches on surface-mount Linear keypads wear out, especially the most-used digits. If someone in your house uses a code with a lot of 1s and 2s, those buttons die first. It’s not dirt – it’s contact wear, and cleaning the face won’t bring it back.
- Intercom audio is garbled, faint, or one-way. This is almost always corrosion on the speaker or microphone terminals inside the entry panel, or a failing audio relay. Dallas humidity plus the temperature swings we get in spring accelerates it. Sometimes it’s a simple terminal cleaning; sometimes the intercom board is done.
- Keypad is completely dead – no lights, no beep, nothing. Before you buy a new keypad, check the fuse on the gate control board and the low-voltage transformer. We see a lot of Dallas gates where the keypad gets blamed for a dead transformer, and replacing the keypad doesn’t fix anything because the problem was upstream the whole time.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Dallas, a Linear keypad replacement installed typically runs $185 to $285. That covers the new keypad, removal of the old one, wiring it to your gate control board, and programming your codes back in. If we’re doing both a keypad and an intercom module together, figure $340 to $420 total for the pair. Intercom-only work, like replacing a failing audio board or corroded speaker, usually lands between $165 and $260 depending on the entry panel model.
What drives the range? The generation of your existing Linear equipment, whether the wiring between the keypad and the control board is still sound, and whether we’re matching an existing system or bringing you current with a newer protocol. Every quote is parts plus labor, written down, and agreed to before we touch anything. No surprise line items at the end, ever. And the work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair isn’t right, we come back and make it right, free.

AfterDIY or Call Us?
Low-voltage keypad work is not in the same danger category as a garage door spring or a gate operator arm under tension. You’re not going to lose a finger swapping a Linear keypad. But there are two honest ways DIY goes sideways on these. First, people mis-wire the keypad and send voltage back into the control board, which turns a $200 keypad job into a $500 board replacement. Second, people buy a keypad online that isn’t actually compatible with their Linear generation, and they’re stuck with a paperweight and a gate that still doesn’t work. What an owner can safely do: pop the keypad housing, photograph the board label, and check the wire connections for anything obviously loose or corroded. After that, call us at (361) 322-4460 and we’ll match the part to the photo, quote it, and have it right the first time.
FAQs
A properly installed Linear keypad in Dallas lasts 8 to 12 years on average, with exposure and usage being the biggest factors. Units on west-facing gates that eat direct afternoon sun tend to die earlier because the membrane switches break down faster in heat. Intercom panels live longer indoors but their exterior speakers and microphones take a beating from humidity. Call (361) 322-4460 if yours is acting up – we’ll tell you honestly if it’s worth repairing.
Sometimes, but less often than people hope. Loose or corroded wire connections we can clean and re-terminate. A cracked relay or worn membrane switches are not repairable in any lasting way, and we won’t charge you for work that buys you three more months. We’ll tell you which category yours falls into before you spend a dime.
Most keypad replacements take under an hour including programming your codes back in. Intercom work with corroded terminals or a failing audio board can take 90 minutes to two hours depending on access to the entry panel. The written quote includes the time estimate, so you know what you’re in for before we start.
Yes. Our trucks carry Linear AK-series keypads, common replacements for the older IEI and AE generations, intercom speakers, audio boards, and the wiring and terminals to do the job right. For discontinued Linear telephone entry systems, we source parts quickly and confirm compatibility before we order. We also stock parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls gates across Dallas.
